A series of four half-day classes designed for the new or beginning Woodworker.
What you will learn:
- Wood technology- tree structure, hard and softwoods, wood movement, how to read grain
- Buying wood- grading, lumber terminology, types of sawn lumber and their behavior, sheet goods
- Shop safety- personal safety protection gear, general safety rules and guidelines
- Tour of the Shop with discussion on use and safety practices with demonstrations on the table saw, jointer, planer, band saw, drill press, various sanders and router table
The students will also be introduced to: - Hand tools- measuring tools, saws, chisels, planes and scrapers;- Sharpening techniques, equipment used in sharpening;- Joinery-assembling order as determined by joinery type used, there are several different joints used in woodworking.
- Design considerations incorporating wood movement, project assembly, finishing preparation and finishing options
- The first student exercise is the making of your own push stick using the band saw, router table, spindle and disk sanders,
- The second exercise the student will learn how to square up a rough piece of lumber, resaw and join together (bookmatch) as an exercise in the class. The student will use the resaw band saw, jointer, planner, table saw and glue two pieces created together.

(All students are expected join SDFWA prior to the first class.)
Registration cost includes: cost of wood material for student exercises, safety glasses, and tape measure.
Please note: it is important to attend all 4 classes. Each class is loaded with new information that is critical to learn as each class works with different tools. If you miss a day you miss a lot.
