Bird Mouth Joinery
Instructor: David Henry
Class will meet: 10 am to 1 pm on Friday Nov 3, Monday Nov 6 , Friday Nov 10
REGISTRATION CLOSES Oct 25
Class Limited to 6
What is bird mouth joinery you might ask? Well, it is an edge joinery method where you can quickly and easily assemble multisided containers of 6 to 16 sides from flat wooden staves. The key tool is a simple V-groove router bit used in the router table. In this class the student will build two different projects using this intriguing technique; a pair of 8-sided napkin holders, built simultaneously, and a 6-sided canister with a decorative lid. Dave will show you, through his own work and demonstration, the diversity of design that is possible with bird mouth joinery (BMJ).
The napkin holders offer a good get-acquainted look at the technique and the method of glue up, as well as providing a pair of useful and decorative gifts.
The canister build is slightly more involved. The decorative lid (and bottom) is assembled from two contrasting woods into an attractive hexagonal pattern.
The Member Shop plans to provide more classes by Dave using this, and other techniques, to make wooden hinges and clasps, boxes, bowls and trays.
All wood and supplies are provided for this class which will be held over 3 days to permit drying of glue ups. There will be plenty to do and the end product is well worth the effort.
Cost: $150
All students will need to be certified to work in the Member Shop prior to the first class.
Students must bring personal safety equipment (safety glasses must wrap around to protect eyes from the side, ear plugs and dust masks optional). Closed toe shoes required, no sandals.
